Step one: Thinking outside the box. The over all goal of any model i get my claws into is to make it as dragon-like as possible. I clipped out only what i needed at first, things like the body , the back legs, the head, etc. As I’m clipping off bits I notice strange shield like pieces that ended up being the front pieces to the fleshborer hive legs. I took the piece and put it against the top part of the spider leg, it perfectly matched!I now knew how i was going to make my front legs.
Step two: clip and glue. I began by cutting my spider leg at the joint carefully. Then glued the top half to the "shield" piece. Then I picked up the bottom half and cut the tip off the carapace at the top end and the top spike. I then lined up the top half with the top part of the carapace so it made an elbow. I then clipped the bottom part of the leg again the forth carapace piece up from the “spiked” end of the leg, flipped that forward so it would make a wrist. After lining everything up I began work on smoothing out edges and clipping away any excess to make the pieces line up perfectly before I glued and green stuffed.
Step 3: claws and green stuff: to get the three toed dragon claw look, I glued extra mandible pieces to either side of the large claw that’s already on the foot. After that I began carefully filling the joints with green stuff. I let that layer dry and then filled in the gaps and smoothed out the green stuff to make it look like a leg.
Step 4: details. For this part I attached the leg to the Tervigon herself. I added just a little bit of green stuff to the “shield” piece to make it look more like the separated carapace parts on the rest of the leg. I also added a small bit of green stuff at the join to keep it from breaking off. Repeat these steps for the other leg and you now have to front legs that look less spider and more dragon like!
Look for how I do the rest of my new Tervigon in future post!
